Digging Deeper for Systemic Alignment - Angie Watson

There are many factors that contribute to the status of a "low-performing" school. Research shows that a primary factor is systemic misalignment of mathematics assessment, standards, curriculum, and instruction. The Professional Teaching and Learning Cycle, developed by SEDL and the Dana Center, is a six-step process that allows teachers to collaborate and to plan and implement lessons that are aligned to their state standards based on needs that emerge from analyzing campus data. To me and as a participant in my session pointed out, it is very similar to Lesson Study but goes a little further by planning and implementing lessons over standards that data shows are weak. One question that I am often asked is "how do we find the time to work collaboratively and do all six steps?" Districts that I have worked with that use the PTLC allow time for professional learning communities where the process can take place. It doesn't happen over night--it takes time. The collaborative team may only get to one lesson per grading period. But, it is an effective tool to help teachers align assessment, standards, curriculum, and instruction.
